Golf: 4 win playoffs to make US Open field

Associated Press

Joey Lamielle had to go 45 holes to earn a trip to the U.S. Open, outlasting Julian Suri in a nine-hole playoff today in south Florida to capture the final spot in a sectional qualifier. Three other players also advanced through playoffs in other qualifiers.

Lamielle got the third and final spot at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Fla.

In Lake Forest, Ill., Jonathan Turcott was in the trees on the first extra hole and escaped with par, then won the playoff two holes later over Kane Hanson. Eric Axley and Jonathan Mills grabbed the final two spots outside Columbus, Ohio, the largest of the 13 sectionals in the United States because so many PGA Tour players were involved.

The 156-man field was set, with nine amateurs among them at Torrey Pines. The U.S. Open starts June 12.

Among the qualifiers was Chris Stroud, the only player to advance through 18-hole local qualifying and 36-hole sectional qualifying two years in a row.
