LONG BEACH, Calif. — Gavin Hedstrom had three hits as Fresno State defeated San Diego, 5-1, to capture the NCAA Long Beach regional yesterday.

Fresno State (40-28), the Western Athletic Conference champion and No. 4 seed, advances to the Super Regionals against Arizona State in a best-of-three series starting next Saturday at Tempe. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have advanced to a Super Regional.

San Diego, ranked sixth in the nation and champion of the West Coast Conference, finish the season with a 44-17 record.

Holden Sprague (4-2) gave up one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings for Fresno State.

Hedstrom provided the go-ahead hit, a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning that gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

Fresno State added three insurance runs in the eighth to seal the victory.

STANFORD (CALIF.) REGIONAL

Stanford 9, Pepperdine 7: Sean Ratliff hit a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam, and Stanford (37-22) overcame an early four-run deficit to beat Pepperdine (38-21) and win its regional.

Jason Castro hit a key two-run double for the Cardinal, who won four consecutive elimination games to advance to a super regional against Cal State Fullerton.

COLLEGE STATION (TEXAS) REGIONAL

Texas A&M 13, Houston 5: Kyle Colligan hit two home runs to lead Texas A&M (46-17) to the regional title with a victory over Houston (42-24).

Colligan put the Aggies up in the first inning with a solo shot, and had a two-run drive during a seven-run second.

Kyle Thebeau (6-4) allowed two runs on six hits in four innings for Texas A&M, which will face Rice in the super regionals.

ATHENS (GA.) REGIONAL

Georgia 18, Georgia Tech 6: Matt Olson went 5 for 6 with three RBIs and Rich Poythress hit a two-run homer as Georgia (39-22-1) beat Georgia Tech (41-21) and advanced to an NCAA Super Regional.

Alex McRee (6-1) entered the game in the first after Bulldogs starter Justin Grimm failed to retire a batter. Pitching the next four innings, McRee allowed four hits, two runs — one earned.

The Bulldogs will host North Carolina State in the super regionals.

TALLAHASSEE (FLA.) REGIONAL

Florida State 16, Tulane 7: Tyler Holt went 5 for 6 and Dennis Guinn capped a six-run fourth inning with a three-run double to help Florida State (52-11) eliminate Tulane (39-22-1).

A fielding error by center fielder Anthony Scelfo with two outs and the score 2-0 in the fourth opened the door for Florida State to score on Jack Rye's single and Guinn's bases-clearing double.

The Seminoles will host Wichita State in the super regionals.

FULLERTON (CALIF.) REGIONAL

Cal State Fullerton 5, UCLA 4: Dustin Garneau drove in three runs and pitcher Brian Wilson earned his second victory in four days to lead Cal State Fullerton (41-20) over UCLA (33-27) and in to the super regionals.
