MLB: Rays place Pena on DL with broken finger

Associated Press

BOSTON — Tampa Bay slugger Carlos Pena was placed on the disabled list today because of a broken left index finger.

Pena was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from Boston's Justin Masterson in the first inning of yesterday's game at Fenway Park.

The first baseman, who started 56 of Tampa Bay's first 58 games this season, stayed in the game to double in the fourth and connect for his team-leading 11th homer in the sixth.

Pena was one of the leaders of a surprising Rays team that entered today's game in Boston with a 35-23 mark and a half-game lead on the Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

While hitting just .227 in 56 games, Pena's 11 homers and 35 RBIs paced the first-place Rays, who promoted outfield prospect Justin Ruggiano from Triple-A Durham today to take his place on the roster.

The team hoped Ruggiano, an outfielder, could make it to Boston from Durham, N.C., in time for today's game.
