Recycling center opens on Welakahao Road

The county yesterday unveiled its new $1.5 million Kihei Recycling and Redemption Center on Welakahao Road.

Funding from the state's HI-5 beverage container redemption program paid 40 percent of the the project's cost, and the county covered the remainder.

The facility, off Pi'ilani Highway across the street from Hope Chapel, features solar-powered lighting, landscaping and a lockable gate that will be monitored by a security patrol.

HI-5 containers will be accepted, along with plastic bottles with necks, plastic bags, glass containers, aluminum cans, rinsed food cans, cardboard, paper bags and newspaper.

The Kihei Recycling and Redemption Center hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with HI-5 redemption hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday; the facility will be closed from 1 to 2 p.m. for lunch.
