PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young freshman heptathlete Chelsi Petersen was killed in a car collision early today in Provo Canyon.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, Petersen was a passenger in car that was making a left turn on the winding, canyon road shortly after 12 a.m. today, when it collided with a car coming the other way. The driver apparently didn't see the other car and turned into its path.
BYU said former Cougar sprinter Paul Smith, who has been training for the U.S. Olympic Trials, was driving the car. He was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in serious condition.
Petersen would have turned 21 next month. She ended her freshman season with a career-best performance at the Mountain West Conference championships, finishing seventh.
