Arson suspected in Kailua house fire

Advertiser Staff

Fire officials suspect arson in a blaze early yesterday at an unoccupied house on Kamahele Street in the Enchanted Lake area of Kailua.

No one was injured.

Initially listed as an electrical fire, fire officials yesterday afternoon said it had been intentionally set.

"Basically, the cause of the fire was intentional, not electrical, as reported earlier," fire Capt. Robert Main said. Damage to the structure was $40,000 and $5,000 to contents, he said.

Fire crews were sent out just before 5:40 a.m. to the single-family dwelling in the 1000 block of Kamahele

Main said 18 firefighters, three engines, one ladder and one battalion chief responded to the fire.

Also yesterday, investigators had not determined what sparked a blaze that destroyed two homes late Friday night in the Soda Creek subdivision in 'Ewa.

Main said the damage estimate for the home at 91-984 Waimomona Place was $410,000 to the structure and contents.

Damage to the home next door, 91-992 Waimomona Place, was set at $430,000 to the structure and contents, which included a damaged car in the carport, he said.

A rare third alarm was sounded for the 9 p.m. fire because the homes in the area are very close together and there were concerns the blaze would spread, Main said. About 50 firefighters responded and several hundred people gathered in the street to watch.

Neighbors pounded on doors and helped a man flee the house at 91-984 Waimomona Place, and also helped a woman escape from the house next door.
