DOWNTOWN
Vintage surfboards on exhibit at 1132 Bishop St.

"Surf Evolution — 100 Years of Vintage Wooden Surfboards" opens from 5 to 7:30 p.m. June 19 at 1132 Bishop St., in the second-floor lobby.

The free display focuses on a time when surfboards were made of wood and the men who rode them were made of steel, organizers said.

The exhibition will feature about 35 surfboards that range from a turn-of-the-century board to post-World War II balsa wood creations.

Names associated with the boards include Duke Kahanamoku, Tom Blake, George Downing, Wally Froiseth, Joe Quigg and Dick Brewer.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 25 and will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free validated parking for half an hour is available in the visitor area under 1132 Bishop St.
