The Honolulu Medical Examiner's today identified a pedestrian who died from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run accident June 4 in Kalihi as Bonifacio Libosado Sr., 79.
According to police vehicular homicide investigators, an Asian man with spiky hair driving a light-colored sports utility vehicle with paper license plates, indicating it was recently purchased, drove off after striking Libosado, who was crossing Dillingham Boulevard outside of a crosswalk at about 9 p.m.
After being struck by the SUV, Libosado was run over by a 2001 Dodge Neon and dragged about 30 feet. The Neon driver remained at the scene.
Libosado died at The Queen's Medical Center June 5 at 12:51 a.m. His name was not released until his identity was confirmed by fingerprints.
The driver of the SUV is still at large, police said.
Since Libosado's death, motorcyclist Derek M. Francis, 27, and 84-year-old pedestrian Florence Tamura were killed in accidents June 5 and Tuesday, respectively.
Pedestrians have account for six of O'ahu's 20 fatalities in 2008. By comparison, O'ahu's fatality count on this date in 2007 was 36 with 12 of them pedestrians.
As of today, 49 people have died in traffic accidents this year in Hawai'i as compared with 66 by this date in 2007.
