BARCELONA, Spain — Second-seeded Maria Kirilenko and unseeded Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez advanced to the final of the Torneo Barcelona on Saturday.
Kirilenko defeated Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 7-5, 6-3 in one semifinal, while Martinez Sanchez rallied to beat fellow Spaniard and doubles partner Nuria Llagostera Vives 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the other.
Kirilenko is bidding for her second title of the year after her win at Estoril in April. She lost her serve once but broke Cohen-Aloro twice to take the first set. The second set began with four service breaks, before Kirilenko broke again in the eighth game.
Martinez Sanchez is trying for her first WTA Tour title. She struggled at the start of her match against Llagostera Vives and dropped a set for the first time in the tournament. She won the second after the players traded five breaks in the opening six games. Llagostera, who had beaten top-seeded Shahar Peer in the opening round, made several unforced errors in the decider to drop her serve in the first and fifth games.
