New-product expo flush with interest

Hands-free toilets, stain removers and landscaping tools were among the hundreds of items at the 31st annual Home, Garden and New Products Show this weekend.
By far the busiest booths were the solar water heating companies that were touting energy savings and tax incentives. But the big draws were the spa dealers and the $3,200 hands-free toilets that flush, wash and close by electronic sensors at the T. Oki Trading Ltd. booth.
Seated inside the unfilled whirlpool spa was a grinning Al Fernandez. On a Father's Day outing with his daughter, he tested out all four of the formed seats inside the spa and wondered if the four-seater would fit in his yard.
"I want to try to buy a spa here," Fernandez said. "I'm having trouble fitting it in. This is definitely comfortable. I think I'll stop back before I leave."
About 12,000 people attended the Home, Garden and New Products Show at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall — a three-day event, said Gloria Chung, Pacific Expos director of operations. This year there were about 250 booths, offering everything from detoxing your feet to checking your property tax records online to learning about the different kinds of grass available to gardeners.
Many of those wandering up and down the aisles were new homebuyers or homeowners looking at what new products are available to them for remodeling.
Dean Brennan just purchased a home in Ocean Pointe in 'Ewa. He wanted to learn more about solar water heating and the different kinds of flooring on the market.
"I'd prefer to play golf today, but my wife said no," Brennan said. "I already played this week."
Standing before the booth specializing in Re-Bath of Hawaii, a local business that specializes in refinishing old bathroom tiles and tubs, was Art Kuwahara, a Kaimuki resident, who was seriously considering what to do about remodeling his home.
"There's a lot of interesting products and new remodeling companies out there with new products," Kuwahara said. "I come here to get better ideas on the new products. I'd never seen this bathtub and shower product before."
As for the hands-free Toto toilet, Arthur Mangosing really wanted one for Father's Day. Having gotten used to using one in Japan, he said, one would work well in his Waikele home.
"Today is my Father's Day out, but this could be a great Father's Day gift," Mangosing said. "I'm going to try to convince my wife to buy one. If she likes it, she'll go for it."
