The governor has released a $1 million grant-in-aid today for the construction of a new Arizona Memorial museum and visitor center.

The current facility serves approximately 1.5 million visitors annually and is the state's most-visited destination, but it is sinking and in deteriorating condition, Gov. Linda Lingle's office said in a released statement.

The new facility will be done in phases so no closures will be needed on the grounds. When completed, it will house a state-of-the-art museum, exhibits and interpretive displays as well as an outdoor theatre for education and visitor orientation; an expanded book shop and improved visitor space and amenities.

The total cost of the project is $52 million, including previous state allotments of $1 million for planning, design and construction; $22 million in federal funds and $27.5 million in private donations.

Construction will begin in September and should be completed by September 2010.
