KA'U
Park's free cultural fest will celebrate paniolos

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park's 28th annual cultural festival will be July 12 at the park's Kahuku Unit in Ka'u.

The event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. will honor the heritage of the Hawai'i cowboy, said park superintendent Cindy Orlando.

Orlando said the park has a long paniolo tradition, with rangers working on horseback to round up feral goats, search for invasive plants, and maintain wilderness trails and campsites. They will be on hand to greet the public at the festival.

The event will feature food, hula performances, music, lessons in Hawaiian crafts and other activities.

The entrance to the free event will be between mile markers 70 and 71 on Highway 11.
