Kono in quarters at U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono won two matches today to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links tournament at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.

Kono defeated Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Calif., 4 and 2, earlier today in the round of 32 and followed that up with a 5 and 4 victory over Alexandra Stewart, of Peoria, Ariz., in the round of 16.

Kono will face Michelle Shin, of Cape Coral, Fla., in Friday's quarterfinal match. Shin beat Angela Oh, of Maple Shade, N.J., on the 19th hole in today's round of 16.

Kono, a recent Punahou graduate, won three consecutive holes — Nos. 12, 13 and 14 — to take control of the day's first match. Gulugian made birdies on the first two holes to go 2 up. Kono cut the lead to 1 up, winning the par-3 No. 9 with a par, and tied the match winning the par-5 No. 10. After the golfers halved the par-4 No. 11, Kono won the next three holes to go 3 up. She won the par-3 No. 16 with a birdie to close out the match.

In the round of 16, Kono and Stewart both opened with a bogey on the first hole. After the second hole, Kono took the lead with a par, while Stewart bogeyed, and Kono never trailed. She closed out the match on the par-5 14th hole with a par, with Stewart recording her fifth bogey of the match. Kono had a bogey, a double bogey and two birdies in her round.

Kono is the only Hawai'i golfer remaining in the tournament conducted by the United States Golf Association.

The quarterfinals and semifinal are Friday, and the 36-hole final is Saturday.
