MVT extends 'Rocky Horror' two more weeks
By Wayne Harada
Better start practicing to toss toilet paper and confetti: six days prior to its opening next Wednesday of "Rocky Horror Show," Manoa Valley Theatre has extended the run of the cult musical hit through July 27.
The kitschy musical by Richard O'Brien, which spoofs sci-fi, goth and horror flicks with rock tunes, comedy, gender-bending characters and audience participation, has been held over two weeks beyond the original July 13 closing.
MVT will configure its theater into a cabaret, with the stage in thrust mode, and in-house cocktail service will be available.
Here's were the fun comes: Audience members will be able to purchase a $5 props kit at the door that includes a bicep tattoo, rainbow confetti, customized playing card, toliet paper, latex laboratory glove, glow stick, newspaper and instructions on how to join in the fun. For safety reasons, outside props — like full rolls of toilet paper, or water guns — will be strictly prohibited.
A 1975 film, "Rocky Horror Picture Show," helped establish a cult following for the stage play, with midnight screenings and toilet-paper-hurling and watergun-shooting, prompting spectators to wear raincoats. The theater has not banned costumes for spectators who really want to get in the spirit of the frivolous fun and dress like one of the characters.
Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 .m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays. Because of the Independence Day holiday, there will be no show on July 4, with a make-up performance at 7:30 p.m. July 8.
Tony Young leads the cast as Dr. Frank N. Furter, the focus of the maniacal fun and cross-dressing posture.
Tickets: $35 general. $30 seniors and military, $20 patrons 25 and younger.
Reservations: 988-6131.
