Kurt Nino and Kellen-Floyd Asao will play the sequel to their 2003 Manoa Cup championship when they meet in the third round of the 100th Manoa Cup today at 7 a.m. at Oahu Country Club.
Asao beat Nino five years ago, winning 8 and 7 on his 20th birthday. Nino found some redemption last year when he defeated Edward Stenftenagel, also on the 29th hole.
Both won second-round matches yesterday, with Nino dropping Corey Kozuma, 3 and 2, and Asao taking out Kane Anguay, 3 and 1.
Former Cup champions Jonathan Ota (2006), Travis Toyama (2005 and '02) and Brandan Kop (1983, '86, '97 and '98) also reached the third round. Ota and Toyama were dominant, with Ota defeating Samuel Rodriguez III, 6 and 5, and Toyama overwhelming Ron Haranda, 9 and 8. Kop beat Joey Sakaue, 4 and 2.
Ota is in the same half of the bracket as Nino and Asao. On the other side, Toyama could face state high school champion Alex Ching in the quarterfinals if both win today.
Kop plays Bou-An Fujieki this morning. Fujieki ousted 2004 champ Ryan Perez, 1-up. The winner will face 'Iolani's David Fink or TJ Kua, a Kamehameha graduate who will play for the University of Hawai'i in the fall.
Quarterfinals start at 7 a.m. tomorrow, followed by the semifinals at noon. Saturday's 36-hole final begins at 7 a.m.
