$4 million released for Kauai retaining walls

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU – Gov. Linda Lingle has released $3,912,500 to construct retaining walls to control erosion at various locations along Kaumuali'i Highway, Kuhio Highway and Kuamo'o Road on Kaua'i.

The retaining walls will be constructed in areas where significant erosion has occurred as well as other areas where health and safety could be compromised if no action is taken in the near future, according to a news release from Lingle's office.

The project also includes repairing portions of a privately owned retaining wall that collapsed due to erosion that occurred within the state right-of-way along Kaumuali'i Highway, near mile marker 16 in Eleele.

A contract will be awarded in August and construction is expected to start in October and be completed by the end of the year.
