AUSTIN, Texas — A former finalist in the national Golden Gloves championship was charged with manslaughter in a hit-and-run accident that left a man dead.
Curtis Lee Meeks Jr., 24, turned himself in Wednesday after police issued a warrant for his arrest, charging him with manslaughter in the death of Jose Fuentes-Reyes, 28. Meeks was released on $15,000 bond.
Manslaughter is a second-degree felony. Meeks faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Police said that, on May 2, Meeks rear-ended a truck sitting at a red light. The arrest affidavit said the driver of the truck, Ines Marquez-Morales, and his three passengers got out of the car to exchange information. The affidavit said Meeks and his passenger also got out of his car.
When Meeks and his passenger returned to their car, the affidavit said, Marques-Morales jumped onto the side of Meeks' vehicle. Meeks began to take off and Marquez-Morales jumped off.
As he accelerated, Meeks struck Marquez-Morales' son. Meeks said he thought he was going to be robbed and didn't know he had hit Fuentes-Reyes, the affidavit said.
Meeks, a light welterweight, was a finalist in the national Golden Gloves championship in 2001. His professional boxing record includes nine wins, one loss and a draw.
Marquez-Morales didn't immediately respond to a phone message from The Associated Press on Friday.
