MILWAUKEE — Dave Bush remained alone, sitting down the clubhouse hall in an equipment room, where players can grab cool drinks between innings.

The quiet righty never watches his teammates hit while he's pitching. He couldn't see the field and couldn't hear the chatter, but he knew the circumstances.

Bush took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before it was broken up by the player he was traded for, and the Milwaukee Brewers barely held off the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-7, yesterday.

"I always know. I always know if I've had guys on base and given up hits," Bush said. "I would say it's probably after the sixth that I actually start thinking about it. The game starting to wind down, and you kind of see what happens."

Lyle Overbay opened the eighth by slicing a triple just beyond the reach of diving left fielder Ryan Braun. Bush (3-7) was dealt to the Brewers in 2005 for Overbay, but said he'd never seen him play before this series.

"Somebody had to do it," said Overbay, who was a fan favorite during his two seasons in Milwaukee. "That's the last thing you want to do, is get no hit. Somebody was going to do it."

Joe Inglett hit a two-out grand slam that highlighted the Blue Jays' six-run rally in the ninth. After giving up an infield hit, Salomon Torres struck out Matt Stairs for his 10th save to complete the Brewers' sweep.

"It wasn't nerve-racking at all," Brewers manager Ned Yost said before breaking out a smile. "I got a little nervous ... but I knew I had Torres out there and we would be in pretty good shape."

Russell Branyan hit his third homer in three days and Prince Fielder had the second inside-the-park homer of his career as the Brewers built an 8-0 lead off A.J. Burnett (6-7).

Bush retired the first 15 Blue Jays before walking Gregg Zaun to open the sixth.

Yankees 2, Padres 1: Joba Chamberlain struck out a career-high nine, Alex Rodriguez drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth and host New York beat San Diego for its seventh straight victory. Chamberlain allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings but has yet to earn a decision in four career starts. Jose Veras (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Rangers 5, Braves 4: Michael Young broke out of a slump with a game-ending RBI single and rookie Brandon Boggs hit a three-run homer for host Texas. With the score 4-all, Ian Kinsler led off the ninth with a double off Blaine Boyer (1-5). After an out, Young lined a single to right off Jeff Bennett. Young was 1 for 31 heading into the ninth.

Royals 4, Cardinals 1: Zack Greinke and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, and visiting Kansas City completed its first three-game sweep of St. Louis since 2001. Greinke (6-4) didn't allow a hit until Rick Ankiel's 11th homer with two outs in the fourth. He struck out seven and walked one in seven innings.

White Sox 13, Pirates 8: Jermaine Dye hit two homers, including a seventh-inning grand slam, and drove in six runs as host Chicago finished a three-game sweep. Orlando Cabrera homered and had four RBIs as the White Sox rallied from a 6-0 deficit.

Twins 9, Nationals 3: Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run triple and reached base all four times up and Glen Perkins won for the first time in five starts as host Minnesota completed a three-game sweep. Perkins (3-2) gave up 10 hits in eight innings; nine were singles.

Rays 8, Cubs 3: Carl Crawford's second career grand slam was the big blow in a seven-run, seventh-inning rally that carried host Tampa Bay to a three-game sweep. Crawford hit reliever Scott Eyre's second pitch into the right-field stands, putting Tampa Bay ahead 6-3.

Rockies 6, Indians 3: Jorge De La Rosa struck out a career-high 10, and Willy Taveras had three hits and scored twice, leading host Colorado to a three-game sweep. De La Rosa (2-3) overcame a shaky start to surrender three runs in six innings.

Orioles 7, Astros 5: Alex Cintron had three hits, including one of host Baltimore's three home runs, and the Orioles extended Houston's losing streak to eight games. Ramon Hernandez and Aubrey Huff also connected for the Orioles.

Diamondbacks 2, Athletics 1: Justin Upton hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning for host Arizona. Upton drove a 3-2 pitch from Keith Foulke (0-2) into the pool area in right-center field to open the eighth, his ninth homer.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Dodgers 7, Reds 4: Matt Kemp hit a homer and a two-run double, and Eric Stults pitched into the seventh inning in his season debut to lead visiting Los Angeles to the three-game sweep. Stults (1-0) took a shutout into the seventh, when an error by second baseman Jeff Kent set up a four-run rally.
