The Real Hawai'i FC 89 boys advanced to the semifinals of the under-19 division in the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals for the second time after accomplishing a first.

Real defeated Cisco Potros, a wild card team from Arizona, 3-2, on penalty kicks yesterday at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

"It was kind of disappointing because I thought we would win in regulation," said forward Keoki Haole, who scored for Real in the second of two full 15-minute overtime periods. "We always go to shoot out and end up losing and this is the first time we won. So I was kind of scared."

Making their kicks for Real were, in order, Haole, Drew Geis, Tye Perdido, Gene Okamura and Curtis Kiyabu.

"I was confident because I always make my penalty kicks," said Kiyabu, the fifth shooter.

Cisco's Phillipe Garre, Anthony Lucero, Fernando Gauna and Kameron Trapp made their shots, and the fifth Cisco shooter hit the left post and the ball pinged out. Since Cisco shot first, Kiyabu's kick gave Real the win.

"We got kind of lucky; we need to play better tomorrow," Kiyabu said.

The teams were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation and 2-2 after 30 minutes of overtime. There is no sudden victory.

Arizona scored first on a goal by Chad Cristia in the 54th minute. Cristia scored after a cross bounced in and out of Real goalkeeper Scott Kawakami's hands to Cristia, who finished into the open goal.

Real midfielder Blayne Muraoka answered three minutes later on a play started on the right side by midfielder Syd Tom, who crossed it. Forward Tye Perdido flicked it with his head and Muraoka was running to the back post to finish the play.

"I saw the ball coming across," Muraoka said. "I beat one defender and kicked it in."

In overtime, Haole put Real up 2-1 in the first minute of the second overtime.

"It was just a scramble and I shot it," Haole said. "It felt like we were going to win for a second, but then they scored."

It was Cristia again with five minutes left in overtime to tie it after the ball floated over the Real defense to the left side of the 18-yard box and he scored on a low shot to the right side of the goal.

Five of eight Hawai'i teams advanced to the semifinals.

The Leahi 91 Premier girls defeated Washington Premier 90, 2-1, on goals by Erin Rementer and Brittney Sanford in the under-17 division.

"We had struggled through the last two games and the kids felt they didn't play their best," Leahi coach Michele Nagamine said. "But they got through to the quarterfinals and felt it was a chance to start fresh. Everything just started to click today."

All three Leahi teams playing in the quarterfinals advanced. Nicole Ha and Chelsea Deptula scored for Leahi 89 Premier as they defeated Sparta 89 Premier, a Utah wild card team, 2-1, in the under-19 division.

In the under-12 girls, Leialoha Kaina scored twice in a 2-1 win against the Slammers FC of Cal-South.

The HSC Bulls 91 boys defeated South Coast Bayern of Cal-South, 2-0, behind goals from Kevin Johns and Lucas Lam, in the under-17 division.

"We should have finished early again but we didn't," said Bulls coach Phil Neddo, who said they had three chances in the first 25 minutes. "We've had a rough road (with games against Arizona, Colorado and two Cal-South teams) and I think it should help us."
