LOS ANGELES — Teams facing Mark Buehrle often end up leaving the ballpark early.

Buehrle pulled a fast one on the Los Angeles Dodgers with eight solid innings, and the Chicago White Sox snapped a nine-game road losing streak with a 6-1 victory last night.

"I think everybody likes it when I'm pitching," said Buehrle, who was working on at least six days' rest for the third time this season and the first time since April 26. "I don't think the fans and the beer vendors like it too much because they don't sell too much beer."

Jermaine Dye hit a two-run homer for the White Sox, who were coming off a three-game sweep by the crosstown rival Cubs at Wrigley Field.

"Hallelujah!" manager Ozzie Guillen said after the Sox improved their road record to 18-23. "We have to be better on the road. We're not a basketball team. This is baseball. To win, to make the playoffs, you have to win a lot of games on the road. This was a big win for everyone."

Nick Swisher hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the first inning, and Orlando Cabrera singled home a run in the second. That was all Buehrle (5-6) needed. The left-hander allowed one run and six hits, fanning pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney in the eighth for his 1,000th strikeout.

The game lasted just 2 hours, 5 minutes. Seven of the 13 games Buehrle has started this season have been played in under 2:30 — four of them lasting 2:10 or less. Last season, 10 of his 30 starts were finished in under 2 1/2 hours.

"I think Buehrle's stuff is the reason he's successful, more so than how quickly he works. But there are a lot of advantages to working quickly," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "Not only are you putting the hitter on his heels a little bit, but your infielders play better behind you."

Derek Lowe (5-7) retired 13 consecutive batters before Carlos Quentin singled with one out and Dye followed with a drive to right-center for a 4-1 lead.

RED SOX 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4: Mike Lowell tied the score with a two-out, two-run double off Chad Qualls (1-6) and Jason Varitek, in a 1-for-30 slump, capped the four-run bottom of the eighth inning with a go-ahead single as Boston rallied past Arizona.

Rays 6, Marlins 4: Dioner Navarro and Eric Hinske drew bases-loaded walks in the eighth inning, Evan Longoria hit a two-run double in the the ninth inning and Troy Percival walked four and gave up a run in the ninth but still managed his 18th save as Tampa Bay beat Florida.

Tigers 8, Cardinals 4: Braden Looper (9-5) gave up four runs on three homers in six-plus innings, but Brian Barton, Skip Schumaker and Brendan Ryan each drove in two runs to lead visiting St. Louis over Detroit, which got a two-run homer from Gary Sheffield in his first game since coming off the disabled list.

Athletics 5, Phillies 2: Emil Brown hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, Jack Cust added a two-run shot in the eighth and Joe Blanton (4-10) ended a four-start losing streak to help Oakland beat Philadelphia.

Orioles 7, Cubs 5: Closer George Sherrill struck out Ronny Cedeno, Kosuke Fukudome and Henry Blanco to escape a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth for his 26th save as Baltimore ended Chicago's 14-game home winning streak in its first visit to Wrigley Field.

Pirates 12, Yankees 5: Jose Bautista and Ryan Doumit homered to spark a 19-hit offense, and Tom Gorzelanny (6-6) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings as host Pittsburgh beat New York for the first time since the 1960 World Series.

Giants 3, Indians 2: Jonathan Sanchez (7-4) allowed five hits, stuck out eight and improved to 4-0 on the road since May 28, and Omar Vizquel had a suicide squeeze for a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh as San Francisco beat Cleveland.

Blue Jays 14, Reds 1: Scott Rolen, Alex Rios and Gregg Zaun hit homers, A.J. Burnett (7-7) allowed one run and four hits in eight innings, and host Toronto battered Bronson Arroyo (4-7) for 10 runs in an inning-plus to rout Cincinnati.

Angels 8, Nationals 3: Mike Napoli hit a run-scoring double in a six-run first inning and added a two-run homer, Vladimir Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 15 games and visiting Los Angeles took advantage of four Washington errors.

Mariners 11, Mets 0: Raul Ibanez homered and drove in three runs, Richie Sexson had three RBIs, Kenji Johjima hit a two-run shot and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (2-3) scattered six hits over seven innings as visiting Seattle blew out New York.

Royals 7, Rockies 3: Zack Greinke (7-4) scattered nine hits, walked none and struck out 10 over six innings, and Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer as host Kansas City beat Colorado for its fourth straight victory while improving to 11-3 in interleague play.

Astros 4, Rangers 3: Lance Berkman hit a two-run homer for a 4-1 lead and Jose Valverde, despite giving up a one-out, two-run homer to Ramon Vazquez in the top of the ninth, hung on for the save as Houston beat Texas.

Twins 3, Padres 1: Brendan Harris and Brian Buscher hit solo home runs on consecutive pitches against Trevor Hoffman (1-5) in the top of the ninth inning, and Minnesota beat slumping San Diego for its seventh straight victory.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 4, Braves 3: Dave Bush (4-7) earned his first road victory of the season, scattering four hits over seven innings, and Milwaukee held on in the ninth after Atlanta closed to 4-3 on a two-run homer to Mark Teixeira, but left the tying run on third base.
