Symphony's season starts with a nod to Brahms

The Honolulu Symphony Orchestra will open its 2008-09 Masterworks season under principal conductor Andreas Delfs on Sept. 6 with a nod to German composer Johannes Brahms. Pianist Andre Watts joins the symphony for the all-Brahms concert, bringing with him his signature theatrical playing style.
Delfs and his army of talent will also take on Richard Wagner for a pair of concerts that Delfs promises are concentrated versions of the notoriously long-winded conductor's work, as well as pieces by Strauss, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Grieg, Sibelius and others.
Among the season's highlights are Prokofiev's classic "Peter and the Wolf," which will be narrated by "Lost" actor Jorge Garcia, and a host of visiting musicians and singers including guitarist Sharon Isbin, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, violinists Cho-Liang (Jimmy) Lin and Giora Schmidt, and soprano Sumi Jo.
Season tickets and tickets to individual concerts are on sale at the symphony box office, or charge by phone at 792-2000.
