A Honolulu police motorcycle officer was injured Friday night when he was struck by a car driven by one of two young men arrested on Moanalua Freeway near the Ala Kapuna overpass for racing on the highway and excessive speed.
HPD spokeswoman Michelle Yu said the officer had pulled over one of the two suspects when his motorcycle was rear-ended by the second suspect's car. The injured officer was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in stable condition with multiple abrasions, Yu said.
The two men arrested were Ronson Kaipono Spencer, 20, and Travis K. Athyasai, 19. Police did not disclose whose vehicle struck the officer and no criminal charges were filed.
Spencer was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, reckless driving, racing on the highway and excessive speeding Friday at 11:15 p.m. on Moanalua Freeway east-bound at the Ala Kapuna overpass. Spencer posted $500 bail for the OVUII charge and $1,000 each for the other offenses.
Athyasai was arrested for racing on the highway, driving without a license, reckless driving and excessive speeding on Moanalua Freeway about 30 minutes after Spencer. Athyasai's bail is $1,000 for each offense.
