Bell, Merkle win Junior PGA titles

Kane'ohe's Alika Bell and Honolulu's Kristina Merkle won the 2008 Aloha Section Junior PGA Championship Saturday at the Ka'anapali Golf Resort.
Bell, a Kamehameha sophomore, shot 6-under-par 136 for a one-shot win over 'Iolani junior David Fink on the Ka'anapali Royal course.
Merkle, a Moanalua junior, carded a 2-over 144 for a one-stroke victory over Baldwin freshman Cassy Isagawa.
Bell and Merkle qualified for the 33rd national Junior PGA Championship, Aug. 13 to 16 at TPC River's Bend in Cincinnati.

HAWAI'I OUT IN FINALS
'Imi 'Ike, a girls volleyball team composed of most of the state's top players, lost to TCA-CA 3rdDegree (Calif.), 25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 29-31,15-12, in the finals of the 18 open division of the Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships in Dallas yesterday.
Outside hitter Kanani Herring, setter Anuhea Keanini and libero Sydney Yogi of 'Imi 'Ike were named to the all-tournament team.
'Imi 'Ike was 5-1 in its pool and then defeated Laguna Beach 3-1 in the first round, Golden Bear 18 FF 3-2 in the quarterfinals, and SCVC 18 Nike 3-1 in the semifinals.
'Imi 'Ike finished second in the pool to Vision 18 Gold, which was ousted by 3rdDegree.
The team was coached by Ryan Tsuji and Mike Sealy.
U.S. SWEEPS POLAND
Logan Tom scored a team-high 16 points and former University of Hawai'i star Heather Bown was named the match's Most Valuable Player as the U.S. Women's National volleyball team beat Poland, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 during FIVB World Grand Prix Pool E action at Wroclaw, Poland, yesterday.
Bown had 10 points with eight kills on 12 attacks, one block and an ace. Captain Lindsey Berg, a Punahou alum, had a kill and block from her setter position and tallied 30 assists.
Team USA, 5-1 overall in the World Grand Prix, travels to Taiwain next week to finish the World Grand Prix preliminary round against Poland (0-6) on Friday, Turkey (4-2) Saturday and Italy (5-1) Sunday.
Tom totaled 13 kills, two aces and a block for 16 points. She also totaled seven digs and 14 service receptions without an error on 21 attempts.
