Big Island cockfight raided

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police arrested 10 people Sunday at a cockfight in Honaunau where drugs and weapons were also seized.

Police said more than 100 people were attending a cockfight at a 9.6-acre property on Napo'opo'o Road in Honaunau when county police and federal agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Drug Enforcement Administration executed a search at the site.

Police seized about 40 chickens and chicken boxes, extensive cockfighting paraphernalia and four dead chickens.

Also seized were two .30-30-caliber rifles, a .22-caliber long rifle, a .357-caliber pistol and ammunition. Police also seized $27,429 in cash for forfeiture.

Arrested for gambling and cruelty to animals were five Honaunau men and a Waimea man.

Police also arrested a 32-year-old Waimea man for promotion of dangerous drugs; a 21-year-old Kailua, Kona man for promoting detrimental drugs, and a Honaunau man and woman for possession of a firearm without a permit and failure to register a firearm.

One of the men was released on his own recognizance, and the others who were arrested remained at Kona police cellblock pending further investigation.

Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained five men and one woman for immigration offenses, and transported them to Honolulu. They also placed immigration detainers on two of the men in county police custody.
