Mauna Kea brushfire still not contained

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — About 40 firefighters worked with bulldozers and two helicopters today to try to contain a fire that burned about 2,800 acres in the Mana Road area of the Big Island on the slopes of Mauna Kea.

County, state and federal firefighters had a firebreak about 90 percent completed by midday, and planned to complete the break and monitor hot spots throughout the night, said Deputy Fire Chief Glen Honda.

There were no structures burned, and no injuries, Honda said. The fire is still not considered contained or controlled, he said.
