BUSINESS BRIEFS
HECO reaches contract with union

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Co. and its subsidiaries have reached a contract agreement with their unionized members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1260.

The contract covers about 1,260 workers at HECO on O'ahu, Maui Electric Co. and Hawai'i Electric Light Co. on the Big Island. The IBEW represents about half of the total number of employees at the three utility companies.

The contract is valid through Oct. 31, 2010, according to a HECO statement. The workers had been working on a contract extension since their old deal expired on Oct. 31, 2007.

Details of the new contract were not available. Union officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Electricity on Kaua'i is provided by the Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative.

$4.2M FREED UP FOR ALA WAI HARBOR

The state has released $4.2 million for improvement projects at Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, including dock replacements and infrastructure upgrades.

A majority of the money — about $3.5 million — will be used to replace docks B, C and D. More than 35 years old, the docks have exceeded their life span and 80 of the 172 slips are currently out of service due to safety concerns.

About $100,000 will go toward the replacement of the harbor's transient docks at the small-boat harbor. About $390,000 will be spent on redesigning Row 700 docks and Row 500 docks.

Another $200,000 will be spent to design upgrades to the harbor's water, sewer and electrical infrastructure.

These projects come after the recent $1.65 million replacement of dock F.

KOREAN LANGUAGE MAGAZINE BEGINS

PacRim Marketing Group Inc. — in collaboration with Skies America Publishing Co. — has launched a new O'ahu-based Korean language magazine for visitors.

Distributed throughout Waikiki and on O'ahu, the Korean publication is a sister publication of the Japanese magazine Pacific Journey-Hawaii, which has been revamped for both design and content.

Sheri Cunningham, senior vice president of Skies America, said the updated publication has thicker, high-quality paper and better binding to give it more of a book feel.

Skies America has published Pacific Journey for more than 16 years in Hawai'i and also has produced Northwest Airlines' in-flight magazine and numerous custom retail-related, lifestyle and travel magazines in the Pacific Rim.

The Pacific Journey Japanese and Korean publications will be distributed on O'ahu at the Honolulu International Airport arrival area, selected ABC stores through a unique partnership, concierge desks, condominiums and throughout Waikiki.
