One killed, five injured in Big Island traffic crash

A man was killed and five other people injured in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Old Mamalahoa Highway and state Highway 11 in the Papa'ikou area of the Big Island late yesterday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to the area at 5:09 p.m. and learned a high-speed crash involved a car, an SUV and a van.

The man driving the car was determined to be dead at the scene and a female passenger in his car was injured, fire officials said.

Four occupants of the SUV were injured. They were a man and woman, both 18, and two young girls, ages 17 months and 3 months.

The van driver was not injured.
