NFL: Quarterback still on Dolphins' draft radar

By Harvey Fialkov

DAVIE, Fla. — Although recently signed veteran quarterback Josh McCown said yesterday he was told he would compete for the starting job with John Beck, the Dolphins still seem to be shopping for quarterbacks.

Yesterday, the Dolphins were one of 25 teams represented at the Pro Day of Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson.

It's unclear whether they will be present today at Delaware's Pro Day, where Blue Hens quarterback Joe Flacco isn't scheduled to do much throwing, according to his agent, Joe Linta.

Back at team headquarters, the Dolphins finalized a four-year deal with Dolphins cornerback Michael Lehan and signed free-agent fullback Boomer Grigsby to anchor the special teams.

Flacco, Woodson, Louisville's Brian Brohm and Michigan's Chad Henne are generally lumped into the second-tier group of quarterbacks behind Boston College's Matt Ryan. However, Flacco's stock has steadily risen since his solid performances at the Senior Bowl and combine.

Linta said that his client will do most of his throwing at privately arranged workouts.

"He did all the measurables at the (NFL Scouting) Combine and he couldn't do much better," Linta said.

The 6-foot-6 Flacco displayed arguably the strongest throwing arm at the combine, and led all quarterbacks with his time of 6.82 seconds in the three-cone drill.

Woodson, who didn't throw or work out at the combine because of a strained hamstring, has been criticized for having a slow delivery.

"Hearing your name get bashed day in and day out for no reason is tough, but you've just got to stay hungry," Woodson told the Kentucky Herald-Leader after running a 4.8 40 in UK's Nutter Field House.

Meanwhile, McCown said on a radio interview that he is, "ecstatic," to have an opportunity for a starting job.

"I want to establish myself as a starter in this league," McCown told WQAM (560-AM) Monday night. "They've got John Beck and, by numbers, they're going to bring in somebody else. All I'm going to do is compete and do the best I can."

McCown is 12-19 in 31 career starts.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins signed fullback Grigsby, 26, a converted 5-foot-11, 249-pound linebacker, has 49 special-teams tackles over the past three seasons. He's expected to compete with second-year fullback Reagan Mauia.

Lehan, 28, who started a career-high 14 games last season, was also re-signed. He had 56 tackles, a sack, an interception, seven passes defended and a fumble recovery.

The Dolphins had Bengals free-agent receiver Tab Perry in for a visit yesterday, but a deal hasn't been reached.

The Packers, Ravens and Bengals are also interested in Perry, a 6-3, 208-pounder, who had 22 catches for 375 yards with three touchdowns in 2004.
