Baseball: Kent's injury not deemed serious

Associated Press

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent said today his pulled hamstring did not require any tests and he will be back hitting tomorrow.

Kent, who turns 40 that day, tweaked his right hamstring while sprinting during pre-game warm-ups Wednesday at the New York Mets' spring training facility and likely won't play for a week.

He felt no pain today after getting checked out by team trainers, and he planned to lift weights later today.

The 16-year major league veteran will return to outdoor workouts tomorrow but refrain from running for the next week.

"It's just tight," Kent said. "I've done this many times. If it was a game situation I would probably play tomorrow, but it's not. It's spring training."

A different warmup routine may have caused the injury, Kent said. The Dodgers held batting practice at Dodgertown before making the 45-minute bus ride to the game because the fields were wet at the Mets' complex early in the day.

Kent said sitting on the bus for so long in one position made it difficult to warm up for a second time.

"I should have known better," Kent said. "I should have told (manager) Joe (Torre), but I didn't think this was going to happen. With 20-20 (hindsight), it's easy to say."

Kent, coming off a season in which he batted .302 and hit a team-best 20 homers, could become the club's first 40-year-old to appear in the Opening Day lineup. But he said age has nothing to do with why he injured himself.

"You get fired up and then you go sit in one position for a while and then you try to fire it up again. That would promote injury for any player," Kent said.
