Kumu hula Mapuana de Silva celebrates three decades of Merrie Monarch Hula Festival performances this year.
De Silva holds the record for the most consecutive years of Merrie Monarch performances. This year will be the 30th year of festival participation for de Silva and the dancers of Halau Mohala Ilima.
De Silva will commemorate the milestone with a special preview of her planned performance for this year's Merrie Monarch Festival at the halau's annual Holomua Ka No'eau concert, scheduled for March 15 at the Hawaii Theatre.
Dancers from the halau's first performance at the Merrie Monarch festival will join the halau's current dancers for both the concert and the Merrie Monarch performance. The concert will honor the work of Hawaiian culture expert Mary Kawena Pukui. Special guests scheduled to appear at the concert include Vicky Holt Takamine, Manu Boyd and Maelia Lobenstein Carter.
Tickets for the event are on sale at the Hawaii Theatre box office for $20 (upper level) and $30 (floor and loge).
