Jane Brown of Hawai'i Kai lets out a cheer as she enters the new Nordstrom in Ala Moana Center this morning. She arrived at 7 a.m. for the 9:30 opening but says she waited 20 years for the store to come to Hawai'i. "Now I don't need to go to the Mainland with my empty suitcase (to bring back clothes from Nordstrom)," she says.

More than 1,000 shoppers turned out for the opening of Hawai'i's first full-line Nordstrom department store at Ala Moana Center today.

Some shoppers arrived as much as four or more hours before the store opened at 9:30 a.m. Many came for the free cosmetic makeovers given outside the entrance to the new 210,000-square-foot store. The makeovers began at 7:30 a.m.

Blake Nordstrom, president of the Seattle-based retailer, said, "This is gratifying. I cannot compare this to other store openings."
