NEW YORK — Jose Canseco is expected to by interviewed by an IRS agent who is aiding in the perjury investigation of Roger Clemens, the Daily News reported today.

Canseco's attorney, Robert Saunooke, told the New York newspaper that IRS agent Jeff Novitzky has asked to meet with the former major league slugger. No date has been set for the meeting.

"We'll get together whenever," Saunooke told the Daily News.

The FBI took over the Clemens case after Congress asked the Justice Department to look into Clemens' testimony at a Feb. 5 deposition and a Feb. 13 hearing. Novitzky, who played a major role in the BALCO steroids case, is also expected to be part of the Clemens investigation.

Clemens testified to Congress he never used steroids or human growth hormone; his former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified he injected Clemens with such substances at least 16 times from 1998 to 2001.

Clemens and McNamee also gave conflicting testimony about a party held by Canseco at his Florida home in 1998. McNamee told Sen. George Mitchell for baseball's report on steroid use that Clemens was at the party, and the pitcher, Canseco and another man had a private conversation at the gathering.

McNamee claimed Clemens asked him about using steroids for the first time a few days after the party.

Clemens says he didn't attend the party. Canseco corroborated Clemens' story in an affidavit to Congress.

If investigators conclude Clemens lied on critical details, he could face charges of perjury, making false statements or obstruction of justice.
