Skating: Shani Davis wins 1,000-meter race

NAGANO, Japan — Olympic gold medalist Shani Davis won the 1,000 meters today at the speedskating World Single Distance Championships.

Davis clocked a track-record time of 1 minute, 8.99 seconds to finish 0.04 seconds ahead of Russia's Yevgeny Lalenkov. Canadian Denny Morrison took the bronze medal with a time of 1:09.42.

Davis became the first black athlete to win a gold medal in an individual Winter Olympic event when he won the 1,000 meters in Turin. The American won two golds in last year's World Single Distance Championships.

Canadian Jeremy Wotherspoon, who won the 500 meters on Friday, was fourth in Saturday's race followed by Jan Bos of the Netherlands.

Sven Kramer of the Netherlands won the 10,000 meters for his second gold of the four-day meet at Nagano's M-Wave.

Kramer, who won the 5,000 meters on Thursday, clocked a track-record time of 12:57.71 to finish 21.10 seconds ahead of Italy's Enrico Fabris.

In the women's 500 meters, Germany's Jenny Wolf defended her title with a combined time of 1:15.62. She set a rink record of 37.88 in the first race and again in the second when she recorded 37.74.

Wang Beixing of China took the silver medal with a time of 1:16.28 while Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands captured bronze in 1:17.20.
