Autos: No action taken against mechanic in spy scandal

PARIS — Formula One's governing body will take no action against former Ferrari mechanic Nigel Stepney for his part in a spy scandal that rocked the sport.

The FIA said in a statement that teams should "not professionally collaborate with Mr. Stepney without conducting appropriate due diligence," but "no formal action may be taken against him under the International Sporting Code."

Stepney was head of performance development at Ferrari in July 2007 when the scandal broke after a 780-page technical dossier on Ferrari cars was found at the home of McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan.

Stepney was fired from Ferrari, and McLaren was fined a record $100 million by the World Motor Sport Council and kicked out of the manufacturers' championship after being accused of using the leaked information.
