UH softball knocks off Netherlands, 4-3

Brandi Peiler singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the University of Hawai'i beat the Netherlands, 4-3, in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night.

Amanda Tauali'i drove in two runs for the Rainbow Wahine (15-4), ranked No. 15 in the country. Melissa Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with a home run, a run scored and an RBI for Hawai'i.

Jessica Morton earned the win for Hawai'i, pitching eight innings. She gave up 10 hits, three runs (all earned) while striking out 10 and walking none.


GOLF

UH MEN TIED FOR 14TH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team fired an opening-round 308 to hold 14th place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate after one round yesterday in Las Vegas.

Ryan Perez posted a 73 to place in a tie for 21st. Kyle Walters was second on the team, tying for 36th with a 75.

Southern California leads the tournament at 285.

DIVISION II SOFTBALL



HPU SWEEPS TWINBILL

The Hawai'i Pacific University softball team swept a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader from Grand Canyon yesterday in Kane'ohe.

HPU (12-0, 4-0 PacWest) won the first game 3-0 and took the nightcap, 6-0.

Courtney Kessel earned the win for HPU in the opener, tossing seven innings of five-hit ball. She struck out one and walked one. Sherise Musquiz was the winner in the second game, scattering four hits over seven innings, while striking out two and walking two.

Grand Canyon is 9-12-1.

DIVISION II BASEBALL



HPU SWEEPS TWO

Aaron Asher hit a home run and had three RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 11-5, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference baseball doubleheader yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

In the second game, Andrew Sramek went 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs as HPU (14-6) beat Grand Canyon (7-15), 17-4.


TENNIS

HPU MEN RANKED 10TH

Hawai'i Pacific's men's team moved into the top 10 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll for NCAA Division II, at No. 10. The Sea Warrriors (3-0) are second in the West Region rankings and HPU junior Hendrik Bode is the region's top-ranked player.

HPU's most impressive win this season came Feb. 9 when it defeated Gustavus Adolphus, which is ranked first in Division III.

HPU will take on Southern Illinois (Carbondale) Monday at 4 p.m., at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
