The killer of deputy sheriff Daniel Browne-Sanchez will spend at least the next 50 years in prison.
That's the sentence given John K. Lorenzo Jr., 33, today by state Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto.
Lorenzo shot Browne-Sanchez to death Feb. 10, 2007 during a botched armed robbery at the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge on Kapi'olani Boulevard.
Browne-Sanchez was working off-duty at the lounge as a bartender's assistant and was shot when he tried to grab Lorenzo, who was carrying a silencer-equipped handgun.
Sakamoto sentenced Lorenzo to a series of consecutive prison terms totaling at least 50 years and at most 130 years behind bars. The sentence came after Browne-Sanchez's mother, Robina Browne, delivered a tearful address to the court.
Deputy Prosecutor Scott Bell told the judge Lorenzo is "incapable of rehabilitation" and "perfectly capable of deadly violence."
Lorenzo did not address the court. His lawyer, Walter Rodby, said he believes Sakamoto's sentence of back-to-back terms of incarceration is unconstitutional.
