Sekiya's cleared to serve again

Advertiser Staff

Sekiya's Restaurant in Kaimuki has been cleared to resume operations after it dumped all its food and disinfected the restaurant from top to bottom following an outbreak of E. coli.

The state Department of Health reinstated Sekiya's permit to conduct food service operations after it passed its final inspection Monday night, health officials said yesterday.

Health officials said the restaurant completed an "intensive mitigation plan" after it was told its permit would be suspended on Feb. 23.

Seven people who had eaten at Sekiya's came down with E. coli 0157:H7 since December.

PARK RESERVATIONS TOPIC OF MEETING

Maui County parks officials will hold a community meeting Monday at Kahului Community Center to inform the public about changes to community center reservation policies and proposed fee changes.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. The center is at 275 Uhu St.

Officials will address a pilot program started in July 2007 that prohibits camping at permit offices by people trying to obtain a community center reservation one year in advance.

"The pilot program was developed to address potential safety hazards, both to park patrons and the general public," said Tamara Horcajo, County of Maui Parks and Recreation director. "In anticipation of spring scheduling, I would like to share the results of this pilot program with the public, and clarify the new rules to minimize misunderstandings as the department puts the new practice into place permanently."

Park officials are also seeking public comment on a proposal to charge rental fees on an hourly basis, instead of the current system of daily fees.
