Moanalua's Robinson two-hits Kailua, 2-0

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Moanalua's Sarah Robinson was blowing pitches past Kailua batters yesterday, and getting drilled in the right elbow by a pitch in the top of the seventh inning wasn't going to stop her from the complete game.

Robinson threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and also had an RBI double in the first as visiting Moanalua beat Kailua, 2-0, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East softball opener for both teams.

Robinson, who was hit by a pitch from reliever Jaellen Johnson to start the seventh, was replaced by courtesy runner Kaylee Chang. Robinson warmed up in the bullpen and came out for the bottom half of the inning.

"I knew we only had one more inning, so I wanted to finish strong," Robinson said. "I didn't want to like bail out or anything. I just sucked it up and thought to myself that after this (game) I can just get it iced and I'll be fine."

She allowed a one-out infield single, but wound up retiring the side in the seventh on just four pitches.

Robinson, a senior, threw 59 of her 81 pitches for strikes and the only walk she allowed was to the first batter she faced.

"This past weekend, she came out full force in our last scrimmage so we felt a little better," said Moanalua coach Kristie Morikawa. "My worry today was not just Sarah hitting her spots, but that our defense is awake and paying attention while she's doing her job because human nature is just to zone out while Sarah is doing her job."

Na Menehune committed just one error — a popup in the fifth that wasn't handled by the second baseman.

Kailua's Tiana McKeague hit a one-out double in the second, but that was the farthest advancement by a Surfriders' base runner.

"We didn't hit the ball," said Kailua coach Bernard Victor. "She threw the ball over the plate good enough for us to hit, but we didn't hit it."

Moanalua scored in the first when Mary Ann Giles hit a one-out single to left off Krista Dumandan and Robinson followed with an RBI double to left.

"I've seen her for the past three years so I know what she throws," Robinson said. "I was just looking for that high, inside pitch."

Na Menehune added a run in the sixth when Michelle Acosta was hit on an 0-2 pitch by Johnson with the bases loaded, which plated Dawn Dela Cruz.

"That happens to anybody," Victor said. "She came in not really warmed up that great."

Kailua's Dumandan allowed seven hits and two runs — one earned — in 5 2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out one. Johnson allowed three hits and hit two batters in 1 1/3 innings.

Acosta, Giles and Britni Ronolo each had two hits for Moanalua.
