Silva, Tom, Raines lead Castle's rout of Kaiser, 12-0

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Castle used patience, power and the pitching of Pulama Silva to pummel Kaiser yesterday.

Kainoa Tom hit two solo homers, Bryan Raines hit a two-run double and grand slam, and Silva tossed a five-hitter in the Knights' 12-0 victory over host Kaiser in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East baseball game.

Castle (1-2) only had six hits, but it took advantage of wildness from three Kaiser pitchers.

Kaiser (2-1) walked six and hit two batters, and eight of them came around to score in the game shortened to six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The Knights had scored one run in dropping their first two games, so yesterday's offensive outburst was a bit unexpected.

"Our bats finally came around so we were fortunate to finally get some offense going," said Castle co-coach Chad Uyehara.

Silva walked one, hit two batters and struck out five. He threw 60 of his 93 pitches for strikes, and all the hits he allowed were singles.

"My curves and sliders were breaking, but not as much as they usually do," Silva said. "I was sticking with my fastball and hitting the corners and my defense backed me up really good."

In the Castle second, Coby Agnes was hit by a pitch from Zachary Wong, moved to second on Keola Jarrett's sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-base throwing error by the third baseman.

Tom led off the third with a homer to right to make it 2-0. After a strikeout, Castle loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks. Jarrett hit a sacrifice fly to left and Raines hit a pinch-hit two-run double to right.

"You spot Pulama five runs, it's really hard to get back," said Kaiser coach Peter Ho.

In the fourth, Tom belted one over the center-field fence to make it 6-0.

"Through my life I've been more of a small-ball player," Tom said. "I haven't had any home runs before so this is a change. I'll probably stick to the same idea: get on, small ball and help my team out on the bases."

The first two Castle batters were retired in the sixth, but the next six scored. A hit by pitch, fielding error by the shortstop and walk loaded the bases. Agres and Jarrett walked to force in runs, and Raines smacked his grand slam to left.

"I looked for the inside pitch and I got it," Raines said. "That's how I ended up getting my two hits."

Ho said his pitchers didn't do a good job getting the ball down.

"This park looked pretty small the way they were swinging the bat," he said. "They punished us when we got up in the zone. They hit our mistakes."
