The sophomore class took most of the awards, including the combined class competition, at the 88th Kamehameha Schools Song Contest Friday night at Blaisdell Arena.

Of the six awards, the sophomores won three and shared another.

The junior class boys won for best boys performance (George Alanson Andrus Cup) and best overall musical performance (Helen Desha Beamer Award). They sang "Kulaiwi."

The Louise Aoe McGregor Award for best student director was shared by Kahala Rowe, who led the senior girls, and Zachary Lum, director of the sophomore combined class.

The sophomore girls, who sang "Aloha Ko'olau," won the Richard Lyman Jr. Trophy for excellence in the use of the Hawaiian language in a song, and the New England Mothers' Cup for best girls performance.

Sophomore director Lum capped the evening by taking the stage for a second time to accept the Charles E. King Cup for best combined class performance.
