North, east shores under high surf advisory

Advertiser Staff

A high surf advisory has been issued for north- and east-facing shores until 6 a.m. today by the National Weather Service.

The northern shores of Niiahu, Kauai, Oahu, Molokaui and Maui could sruve 10 to 15 feet during the advisory, while the eastern shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island will be 6 to 10 feet during the advisory period.

During the advisory surf will produce rip currents and localized beach erosion.

Surf will also hit 6 to 10 feet along west-facing shores today, while south shores will see much more tame surf at 1 to 3 feet.

The weather service said a moderate northwest swell should remain at advisory levels through Monday night before subsiding through midweek. Breezy trade winds and resulting high surf on the east facing shores will likely continue through much of the week. A small south swell expected late Tuesday night will bump up the south facing shores Wednesday and Thursday.
