Retired sumo wrestler Konishiki was honored at the state Capitol for his contribution to the ancient Japanese sport and his community service on O'ahu's Leeward Coast.
Born on O'ahu as Salevaa Atisanoe, Konishiki retired from sumo in 1997 after reaching the rank of ozeki. At 580 pounds, he was the heaviest wrestler of his time.
After retirement, he started Konishiki Kids Foundation, which gives disadvantaged children an opportunity to travel to Japan and be exposed to a different culture.
Konishiki was honored in the House Chambers by Rep. Karen Awana, D-Kalaeloa-Nanakuli.
