Head-on collision kills Kailua man

An 83-year-old Kailua man was killed yesterday in a head-on collision between a car and van at 49-560 Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:04 p.m., said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic. The man's name was not released.
Police Sgt. Lorenzo Ridella said the man was driving a 1998 Buick Regal southbound when it crossed the center line and hit a Nissan Quest minivan.
A La'ie woman, 51, who was driving the van, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
MOTORCYCLE CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED
The motorcyclist killed Sunday in a collision on Kaukonahua Road between Wahiawa and Waialua was identified yesterday by the Honolulu medical examiner's office as Jonathan Vincent Daniels, 27.
Daniels was an Army specialist stationed at Schofield Barracks. He suffered head and internal injuries from the 8:13 a.m. accident and died at Wahiawa General Hospital at 9:01 a.m.
Daniels' 2003 Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle crossed the center line and into the path of a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder, police said. Speed was a contributing factor, investigators said.
SURFER WHO DIED WAS FROM MILILANI
The surfer who died Sunday after being rescued at the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore was identified yesterday by the medical examiner's office as Joshua Kalai Nakata, 23, of Mililani.
Nakata was pulled from the water by city lifeguards and brought to shore at 3:18 p.m. City lifeguards performed CPR until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived.
Nakata died at Kahuku Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
MURRAY NAMED MAUI FIRE CHIEF
Maui native Jeffrey A. Murray yesterday was named Maui County's new fire chief, succeeding Carl Kaupalolo, who retired in December.
Murray, 42, serves as leader of the fire department's Urban Search and Rescue Team.
