The Kailua softball team's offense put it together in the fourth inning yesterday against Castle. And it came just a half-inning after its defense had fallen apart.

Kailua scored four runs on four hits and two walks in the fourth in a 5-2 victory over host Castle in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game.

Kawehilani Hall belted a two-run homer and Zsalei Kamaka had a two-run double in the inning for No. 10 Kailua (2-1).

Over the first three innings, the Surfriders were 1 for 10 with a double, and none of the outs left the infield.

"All the bats were working at the same time," said Kailua coach Bernard Victor. "We just came out hitting in that one inning. I don't know why. All of a sudden we started hitting."

In the bottom of the third, No. 7 Castle (2-1) took a 2-0 lead with the help of two Kailua errors and a fielder's choice where pitcher Krista Dumandan fielded a sacrifice bunt and threw to third too late in an attempt to catch the runner off the base.

"We were terrible, horrible," Victor said. "I wanted to hide already. We were really bad."

Only one ball left the infield for the Knights, a bloop RBI single to right by Leisha Liilii. At that point, they had a run in with the bases loaded and no outs, but the Nos. 4 and 5 hitters fouled out. A fielding error by the shortstop scored the second run.

"We had the bases loaded and the right people at-bat, but we just couldn't get it done," said Castle coach Jon Berinobis, whose team stranded seven runners on base, including five in scoring position, over the first four innings.

In Kailua's fourth, Tiffany Perez led off with a single to right off Chandelle Dacosin, and Hall hit the ball over the left fielder's head and sprinted home to tie the game at 2-2.

"Once the first hitter got on, I was: 'OK, I got to get a base hit,' " Hall said. "I just connected with it and it went."

After a ground out, Johnna-Lyn Pedro singled, and Tiana McKeague and Daneen Aui-Williams walked to load the bases. Berinobis then replaced Dacosin with Macy Moe.

"I didn't know until I went out to the mound and she said her arm was a little sore," Berinobis said of Dacosin. "She did a good job to that point, but she was getting the ball up in the zone, so that's when I made the change."

Kamaka greeted Moe with her two-run double to right to make it 4-2 Surfriders.

Shelby Lono added an insurance run in the sixth with a homer to left.

Dumandan allowed two runs on seven hits in 5-plus innings for Kailua. She was helped off the field after Moe lined a ball off her right knee leading off the sixth.

Lono came in and pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts for the save.

"Krista is not as fast, but she has more movement on her ball," Victor said. "When Shelby came out her ball was really fast and they had a hard time catching up with her ball."
