Cheynne Lishman helped add another chapter to Kalaheo's rich boys basketball tradition this season, first by leading the Mustangs to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division title and then by being named East Player of the Year after a recent vote of league coaches.
Lishman, a sharp-shooting 6-foot-2 senior wing, joins other Kalaheo greats like Duane Bradley, Alika Smith and Julian Sensley in receiving the honor.
Lishman was used sparingly as a freshman and sophomore before breaking into a starting role last year, earning Eastern Division All-Star first-team recognition.
This season, he emerged as one of the league's top all-around players, showing an ability to attack the basket and distribute the ball in addition to draining 3-pointers from all angles.
Lishman scored 23 points in a 61-57 victory over Kaimuki and 19 against Kahuku in a showdown of East unbeatens. The Mustangs went on to finish the regular season undefeated at 12-0, earning them a No. 1 ranking in The Advertiser's statewide poll of coaches and media.
Lishman is joined on the OIA East All-Star first team by Moanalua senior guard Stevie Austin, Kahuku junior guard Jray Galeai, Kailua junior post Kenny Ellis and Kaimuki sophomore center Desmond Tautofi.
Austin, a dazzling 5-9 point guard, is a repeat first-team selection after again displaying deft all-around skills in dribbling, shooting, passing, making steals and floor leadership.
Galeai helped Kahuku take second in the East; Ellis and Tautofi were tall and athletic post players who could score, rebound and block shots.
Kalaheo's Chico Furtado, who guided the Mustangs to their 18th consecutive state tournament appearance, was named Coach of the Year.
