Sacramento State stops baseball Rainbows, 4-2

Gabe Jacobo doubled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to lead Sacramento State past Hawai'i, 4-2, today to take the opener of the four-game Western Athletic Conference series at Hornet Field in Sacramento, Calif.

Starter Jose Ramirez gave up two runs, four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings for the Hornets. Jeff Roth (1-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Hornets (7-14 overall, 2-3 WAC).

Jared Alexander (3-3) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and three walks (two intentional) with four srikeouts for the Rainbows (9-16, 2-3), who have dropped three in a row.

The Hornets ended the scoreless deadlock when Jeff Hannah led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to right to put his team ahead, 1-0.

Sacramento State added to its lead in the sixth. With one out, Ryan Blair singled, stole second and took third on David Flores' single to left. A wild pitch allowed Flores to take second, as Blair held third. After the 1-0 count, Gabe Jacobo was intentionally walked to loaded the bases. Tim Wheeler grounded out to third to score Blair to make it 2-0.

The Rainbows tied it in the seventh. Brandon Haislet led off with a single to center before Vinnie Catricala popped out to short. Haislet stole second, Jeff Van Doornum and Evan Zimny walked to load the bases. Landon Hernandez flied out to shallow right, holding the runners. But Kevin Macdonald's two-run single to left tied the game at 2 and sent Zimny to second. Ramirez was pulled for Jeff Roth to face Nate Young, who grounded to third for a force to end the inning.

The Hornets regained the lead in the eighth. Hunter Martinez led off with a walk and advanced to second on Blair's sacrifice. Flores was intentionally walked. Alexander was pulled for Matt Daly to face Jacobo, whose RBI double scored Martinez. On the play, Blair scored on shortstop Young's error to make it 4-2.
