Police still investigating reports of rape at shelter
Police continued their investigation yesterday at the Wai'anae Civic Center emergency homeless shelter into an alleged sexual assault on a girl at the state facility.
Shelter residents, including the mother of the 9-year-old girl, have said the incident happened around noon Monday.
But by yesterday afternoon — other than to say no arrests had been made — detectives with the Honolulu Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division had shed no light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, or indicated exactly where, when or how it had occurred.
Darryl Vincent, site director for U.S. Vets, which manages the state facility, said shelter officials were cooperating with authorities.
"We take allegations like these very seriously," said Vincent. "It's a police matter at this point. But we will assist in any manner we can."
