Olympics: Japan women's basketball team cleared for Olympic play

GENEVA — The Japanese women's team will compete at a qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympics after a suspension on the country's basketball federation was lifted.
Basketball's world governing body (FIBA) said it has worked out a deal with the Japanese Olympic Committee, which suspended the Japan Basketball Association (JBA) in March for failing to fill official positions.
"The institutional developments over the past couple of days have been long overdue and are very encouraging," FIBA secretary general and IOC member Patrick Baumann said today.
"We expect now JBA to stop the infighting and appoint without delay a new president, so that the relationships with both FIBA and the JOC can be normalized rapidly."
The women's team will play at the June 9-15 Olympic qualifying tournament in Madrid, Spain, to decide the final five places for the Aug. 8-24 games.
