Big Island police warn of latest Internet scam

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii County police are warning the public about another internet scam.

A Hilo woman reported Wednesday afternoon that she received an e-mail Tuesday claiming to be from the Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union.

The e-mail claimed to be a customer service survey and offered the Hilo woman a chance to win $500 for completing it. The bogus survey requests personal information, including a Social Security number and a credit card number.

Police have confirmed that the e-mail is a scam. They advise anyone who receives such an e-mail to delete it without opening it. Anyone who has already responded to the bogus survey should call the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311.
