Ex-'Iolani tennis star Au in colleges' hall of fame

 •  Taekwondo offers more than just some kicks

Lance Au, a 1987 'Iolani graduate who went on to play tennis for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, was inducted into the schools' athletic hall of fame.

Au won a state tennis title in 1986 and teamed with James Osborne to capture the Kailua Men's Night Doubles crown in 1987.

In college, Au was a seven-time All-American and led CMS to four top-10 national finishes. He won 104 matches in his singles career and 92 in doubles. He was a national champion in doubles in 1988 and the runner-up in singles in 1991.

GYMNASTICS

ISLE ATHLETES ADVANCE

Eighteen athletes from Hawai'i advanced to the next level after competing in the U.S. Junior Olympic Region 2 Championships April 18 to 21 in Spokane, Wash.

Fifteen Hawai'i Level 10 gymnasts earned the highest all-around scores in their age divisions, qualifying them to participate in the Junior Olympic National Championships on May 16 to 18 in Kissimmee, Fla. Three Level 9 gymnasts earned the highest all-around scores in their age divisions, earning the opportunity to compete in the Junior Olympic Western Championships, May 9 to 11 in Charles, Mo.

Among the Level 10 competitors, Punahou senior Becca Pang was first all-around in the Senior D Division, with a score of 37.025. In Level 9, Laura Shigeoka from Pantheon Gymnastics on the Big Island took first in the Senior D division with an all-around score of 36.475.

POLO

SEASON BEGINS

The Hawai'i Polo Club will open its season on Sunday with matches beginning at 2 p.m.

Gates at the Mokule'ia Polo Fields on O'ahu's North Shore will open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission, with all military admitted on a two-for-one basis.

This season, clubs will visit Hawai'i from Chile, Argentina, Mexico, North Carolina and Maui. The U.S. Polo Association Women's Tournament will be held in August.
